LBJ Program

Overview

The LBJ Obstetrics and Gynecology residency was established in 1990 and is fully accredited by the RRC (Residency Review Committee) for OB/GYN. The hospital is accredited fully by the JCAHO. The residency program is one of two programs, which are under the leadership of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, Department of OB/GYN.

The LBJ Ob/Gyn Residency is officially classified by the NRMP as UT-LBJ Hospital, matching number 292380.

The program therefore is staffed entirely by faculty of the University of Texas and all faculty members serve at the discretion of the Department of OB/GYN Chairman, Larry C. Gilstrap, III, M.D. The LBJ Ob/Gyn Residency Program Director is Lisa Hollier, MD.

Graduates of the residency program have successfully established practices, entered fellowship training, and taken faculty positions. Graduates of the program are always invited to participate in the Annual Former Residents in OB/GYN ceremonies in June of each year. The program is approved for five residents at each year level of training.

LBJ OB/GYN Residents Experience

The residency provides a full scope of patient services in obstetrics and gynecology. Deliveries for several years have been approximately 5,000 per year. There is a full compliment of complicated pregnancies, and you will not find a better teacher of operative obstetrics than our own Dr. Yeomans. Gynecology provides services to all patient age groups, and includes laparoscopic surgery, open pelvic surgery, oncologic staging, and urogynecological procedures. Oncology occupies four months during the entire residency, part of which is spent at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Our clinic is situated within the hospital, and on average approximately 100 patients are seen a day.

Resident rotations to other facilities occur and provide interface with private physicians and private patients. Rotations to Memorial Hermann Hospital, Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, Texas Women’s hospital, and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center are part of the four-year residency program.

Ambulatory Care

Ambulatory Care is provided on the 2nd floor of the hospital. All patient care is continuity of care and patients and physicians have independently expressed satisfaction with the concept. Approximately 40% of the outpatient appointments are gynecologic in nature. All patients are resident managed under faculty supervision.

Resident Facilities

Resident lounges and private study areas are maintained on L&D, clinics, and the O.R. Private individual sleeping quarters are in the L&D area. A resident library, accessible computers, and 24-hour a day faculty coverage are present. Extended cafeteria hours, a medical record department and other services compliment the residency experience.

The Didactic Curriculum

In addition to the experience gained through direct patient care, the residents at LBJ are provided with the following:

  • Tuesday afternoon conferences in Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Thursday morning Gyn case conference
  • Monthly journal club
  • Month Morbidity and Mortality conference
  • Daily AM/PM Board Rounds
